SAPI National Awards

The SAPI National Awards were established to:
  • Reflect on and recognize valuable contributions made by individuals and organizations to the Planning profession.

  • Inspire their continued involvement and those of others to further promote and augment the Planning profession.

  • Promote the key role of and voice of Planning and our profession in society.

Awards Rules & Criteria -

  • Nominators and Nominees can be SAPI members and non-members
  • Nominees will be communicated with by SAPI regarding acceptance of the nomination for the award
  • Proof of age for the young planner must be submitted
  • A nominee may only be nominated once and in only one category for the academic and professional awards
  • Nominees can either be individuals or organisation as per the category explanation.
  • Local, district and metro nominations of municipalities are welcomed and will be assessed against each other i.e. a local municipality will be assessed alongside other local municipalities and metros with metros.
  • There is no limit to the number of nominations a nominator can make, a nominator may nominate in all ten categories provided that the nominees are different for each category.

  • Nominations are only processed on-line.
  • Nominators are encouraged to motivate and detail the reasons for the nomination and make full and detailed submissions with presentations, photographs and video uploads links for assessments and judging.
  • Such material will be used by SAPI regardless of who wins the award to promote the planning profession on its website. Therefore, all use rights must be provided in the nomination.

  • Closing date for nomination is 31 July 2020. No submissions will be accepted thereafter.
  • Nominations will be assessed by in a two- stage process by independent assessors.
  • No communications from nominators or nominee will be entered from 1 August 2020 to announcement of winners other than verifications.

  • The decision of the Judges Panel will be final.

Categories

Academic
  1. ACADEMIC / RESEARCH
    For a planning school and/or individual who has made an outstanding contribution to planning education and training, by enhancing the teaching and learning experience in an innovative, creative way and having published innovative research.

  2. STUDENT
    For a planning student for his/her tertiary level outstanding academic performance in planning and/or innovative and relevant project idea or implementation.
Professional
  1. YOUNG PLANNER
    For a bright young planner (under the age of 35) for his/her exemplary achievements and promising for the future in the planning profession as well as his/her contribution to the promotion of the planning profession.

  2. PUBLIC SECTOR (National and Provincial departments) and STATE-OWNED ENTERPRISES
    For a planner that has made an outstanding contribution to the planning profession with outcomes and enhanced public benefit planning.

  3. PRIVATE SECTOR
    For a planning consultant (individual) or planning consultancy firm for exemplary practice that has enhanced the reputation of the planning profession and designed and/or implemented high impact planning project/s and/or intervention.

  4. EXTERNAL / ASSOCIATE
    For a non-planner in recognition of his/her great contribution to the planning profession and/or to the cause of public benefit planning.

  5. OUTSTANDING PLANNER
    For a professional planner in recognition of his/her outstanding planning work that has made a major impact in the state or private sector developments and thereby a significant contribution to the planning profession.

Institutional
  1.  MENTORSHIP
    For an organisation that has provided invaluable medium to long term mentorship towards the professional registration and career development of young planners, for support in transferring and/or maintaining skills and knowledge in the planning profession as well as adding value to the planning profession and mentees.

  2. MUNICIPAL
    For a local, district or metropolitan municipality for its exemplary formulation and implementation of Integrated Development Plans (IDP), Spatial Development Plans, District Growth and Development Plans, Human Settlement Plans, Transport Plans or any other forward spatial plans towards ensuring sustainable spatial outcomes.

  3. GREAT PLACES
    For a community, neighbourhood or group of citizens that has embarked on an exemplary participatory self-development and/or outstanding community development project or programme that has improved the quality of community life and/or overcome difficult community issues and/or local circumstances.
